Napa Valley Museum Refreshes History with Exhibit
"ebb and flow" will be on view March 4 through April 30, 2017 at 55 Presidents Circle, Yountville. http://napavalleymuseum.org/exhibition/ebb-and-flow/
Napa Valley Museum will be presenting a new series of works by artist Ryan Reynolds in the History Gallery starting March 4 and running through April 30, 2017.
Reynolds uses transparencies of historical photographs (taken from Napa Valley Museum's and Napa County Historical Society's archives) and layers them into landscape paintings that represent the changing waterways of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Objects from NVM's collection will be paired with the photographs embedded in the landscape.
Discussing his work, Reynolds says, “Historical photographs are woven into the landscape. Each photo is an artifact and a window into a personal narrative. The plurality of the past is referenced in individual faces describing stories of displacement, immigration, labor, race, class, gender and power. Although vineyards are central to the Napa Valley present and past, it is the distinct land formations that make the valley fertile and inhabitable that are represented.”
This exhibit also marks a refresh of the semi-permanent downstairs History Gallery. The space has been reorganized to accommodate small art exhibits that relate directly to Napa history. Objects from the permanent collection have been rotated and will include more information about the Museum’s collection of historical winemaking tools and machines. Those familiar with the Museum will enjoy a fresh look at the Museum’s historical collection, and those new to the Museum will enjoy a look at Napa’s historical ecology through the eyes of Reynolds.
