Napa County was established in 1850 and is one of the original 27 California counties. It is named after the Napa Indians who once inhabited the area. Its county seat has always been Napa. Napa county is the center of the state's wine industry.

Napa County is made up of five cities: American Canyon, Calistoga, Napa, St. Helena & Yountville.Of the cities in the county, Napa itself has the greatest
number of residents, accounting for 56 percent of the total, or 76,915 people.
Napa has historically been the city with the greatest concentration of people
as well as very rapid growth. The second-most highly populated areas of Napa
County are the unincorporated regions, which included 26,213 residents. American
Canyon has experienced the largest growth rate in Napa County with 19,454
residents. St. Helena has a total population of 5,814 residents, followed
closely by the City of Calistoga with 5,155 residents, while Yountville
accounted for 2,933 residents.
